Google has launched Gemini Nano, a local LLM (large language model) integrated into Android 14 via Android AICore, reinforcing the shift towards on-device AI capabilities.

This innovation is embedded in Pixel 8 Pro with features like 'Summarize' in the Recorder app and 'Smart Reply', compatible with WhatsApp from the outset.

Android AICore simplifies AI integration for app developers, managing models and reinforcing guardrails, thus ensuring safety. Apple, holding a significant U.S. market share, is expected to update Siri and other apps with generative AI in iOS 18 as well.

Google plans to extend AICore and Gemini Nano support to more devices and partners, hinting at a potential collaboration with Samsung. Google's machine learning hardware advancements and partnerships could challenge Apple's dominance, particularly if allied with other Android market players.

The Google Tensor G3 chip, along with MediaTek and Qualcomm's latest releases, showcases the industry's commitment to enhancing on-device AI. Apple's A17 Pro chip doubles its neural engine's capacity, emphasizing the race for superior AI-powered mobile experiences.

Samsung's Gauss AI model and Xiaomi's enhanced Xiao Ai assistant reflect the industry's pivot towards generative AI models with local operation, offering functionalities such as image generation and coding assistance.

All the top smartphone manufacturers are increasingly focusing on embedding generative AI models into devices to improve user experiences.
